The ‘Basket Case’ group pulling their gig comes after Russia was banned from this year’s ‘Eurovision Song Contest’.
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) – which produces the event – announced the decision to ban Russia from the show, saying it could bring the competition into disrepute “in light of the unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”.
In a statement, the EBU said: “The decision reflects concern that, in light of the unprecedented crisis in Ukraine, the inclusion of a Russian entry in this year’s Contest would bring the competition into disrepute.
“Before making this decision the EBU took time to consult widely among its membership.
“The EBU is an apolitical member organisation of broadcasters committed to upholding the values of public service.”
The organisation explained that it’s determined to protect the “values” of the event, which is due to be held in Turin, Italy, in May.
The statement explained: “We remain dedicated to protecting the values of a cultural competition which promotes international exchange and understanding, brings audiences together, celebrates diversity through music and unites Europe on one stage.”
The EBU had initially insisted the country would still be able to compete at Eurovision.
The organisers explained that they were “currently planning” to host entrants from both Russia and Ukraine.
The statement said at the time: “We of course will continue to monitor the situation closely.”
However, Ukraine’s state broadcaster, UA:PBC, called for Russia to be suspended from the event, which was won by Italy’s Maneskin in 2021.
The broadcaster described their Russian counterparts as a “mouthpiece for the Kremlin and a key tool of political propaganda”.

He continued: “I wasn’t quite sure … because I’ve done some very good things for my body, and I’ve also had a lot of fun. I’ve done some things that could be … some kind of abuse, I mean, nothing really clinical. I won’t get into the details. Just use your imagination!
“But it was, it felt pretty serious, and to get through that and then be back in a room like this, facing this many people facing this way, listening to us play music for you is really, truly, it’s been a gift and an honour. Thanks for listening. We’re so grateful.”

Ben Foakes will continue to bat in the top six for Surrey in the early stages of the County Championship season, despite conceding that he is learning on the job while batting at No. 7 in England’s Test team.
Twenty-five Tests into his England career, Foakes has batted exclusively at No. 7 or 8 and has often struggled to adjust to batting alongside tailenders. He made 205 runs in 10 innings during their recent 4-1 series defeat in India, with a top score of 47, during which time his career average dropped below 30.
“I felt like I kept pretty well; my keeping felt good,” Foakes said, reflecting on his performances in India. “To start off, I didn’t feel amazing with the bat and then, yeah, disappointed in a couple of innings that I didn’t kick on. Again, that role of batting lower down, batting with the tail – the more I do it, the more I look at it as: ‘How many times can I impact [the game]?
“Because in some series you might not get an opportunity to go big, for example, so it is very crucial when you do get a chance to try and really kick on, so I was disappointed in the fourth Test [in Ranchi] where I could have kicked on and didn’t. I felt alright with the bat. I’m still evolving and trying to learn [how to bat] with the tail and how to manage those sorts of situations.”
Foakes has been happy to play second fiddle in big partnerships with frontline batters, including his series-turning century alongside Ben Stokes against South Africa in 2022, but has found it harder to find the right tempo when batting with England’s bowlers. Those struggles were perhaps best exemplified during a ninth-wicket stand worth 12 runs in 12.2 overs with Shoaib Bashir in the second innings at Ranchi.
“Naturally, batting higher up is preferable for me,” Foakes said. “Obviously, when you play for England, that will not always happen and it is understandable. But it naturally suits my game more to be higher. Over the period of time I’ve played for Surrey, there are not that many instances where you come in, face five or 10 balls, and you’re batting with the lower order when you have to play a different game.”
Yet Foakes does not intend to slide down the order in the Championship in order to gain more experience in that role. Instead, he believes that his hopes for retention in the England side ahead of their next Test against West Indies on July 10 will be best served by him scoring as many runs as possible from the middle order.
“It’s tricky,” he said. “I’ve been in and out of England, but it’s always been about trying to get runs to get back in the England team. Here [at The Oval] I’ve found a pretty good spot at No. 5. I’ve been pretty successful for a few years, and for me, it is about always working on my game so I feel like I can do a decent job if that situation does arise.
“There was definitely a period where all my focus and all my training was just to bat and bat and bat, and trying to grind big scores. For me, it is more about trying to score big runs for Surrey but then also working on that [batting with the tail] as more of an add-on than just the odd session… to maybe have a gameplan where I can take someone down rather than just bat against them.”
Foakes has grown accustomed to coming in and out of the England side, and goes into the 2024 summer with a familiar lack of clarity around his status in the Test set-up. “I haven’t been told anything,” he said. “The more years I’ve got into my career and the more I’ve been in and out, I’ve almost come to an acceptance that it has been the case.
“I try not to worry about it, try not to stress too much about getting a long run or external stuff. India, first and foremost, I took as just trying to really enjoy it. The more times you get dropped, the more you realise you don’t know how long you’ve got left… while you’re out there, rather than stress too much about the game or think ‘this might be my last chance’, just enjoy the fact you are playing and you don’t know how long for, essentially.”
England are due to play a dozen Tests in the second half of 2024, so Foakes is considering missing an early-season Championship game in order to manage his workload. “It depends what they’re looking at. [It depends] whether I am likely to play or not likely to play, and then [I will] reassess.”

Jason Roy will not feature in the Hundred this summer after going unselected in Wednesday night’s draft at the Shard in London, leaving him without a team for the 2024 season following his release by defending men’s champions Oval Invincibles.

Jada Pinkett Smith pulled a dress from her closet to walk the silver carpet at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards.
The ‘Girls Trip’ actress turned heads in her long-sleeved Gareth Pugh gown as she arrived at the ceremony with her husband, Will Smith, and she explained the floor-length black and blue garment was a vintage piece she had picked up “a while ago”.
Speaking to ‘Live from E! SAG Awards’ host Laverne Cox, she said: “It’s vintage. It’s something that I bought a while ago. [I] had it in the closet and I was like, ‘You know what? I think girl is ready for the SAG Awards!’ So, pulled it out.”
While Will’s dark navy suit perfectly matched his wife’s look, he admitted he hadn’t put very much thought into his ensemble for the night.
He joked: “It’s just a little something I put together.
“My thing is I take a shower and I wear what’s on the bed when I get out.”
Jada added: “He has a very good stylist.”
Will confirmed: “Yeah, absolutely.”
The 53-year-old star went on to win the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role award for his work on King Richard and on the red carpet, he reflected on the “deep responsibility” he felt playing the father of tennis legends Serena and Venus Williams.
He said: “When you are telling a story of someone’s life, it is deep responsibility. Because at my level, when I put something out in the world, people take it as the truth. So, if the family didn’t like it, didn’t believe it, as an artist, that is devastating.”
And he admitted he dreaded hearing Venus and Serena’s reactions to the film.
He said: “When I heard that they were watching it, that was like the worst two hours of my life. But they called immediately and said they both cried and they felt honoured.
“Everything else after that is icing on the cake.”
However, when he won later in the evening, Will admitted it was one of the “greatest moments” of his career because of who he was sitting with inside the Barker Hangar.
He said: “That may have been one of the greatest moments of my career just now because my name was called for ‘King Richard’ sitting next to Venus Williams and her sister.”
Selena Gomez went for a “grand and over-the-top” look at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, thanks to a lot of statement jewellery.
The ‘Only Murders in the Building’ actress walked the silver carpet on Sunday (27.02.22) in a black velvet Oscar De La Renta gown with gems from Bulgari, including their high-jewellery Serpenti necklace, a white gold piece featuring two pear-shaped emeralds and diamonds totalling 37.04 carats and a platinum ring featuring a 9.89-carat cushion-cut Columbian emerald and her stylist, Kate Young, was delighted with the finished look.
Kate said: “We really wanted to do tons of jewellery, and [the ring] is a major emerald.
“Together with the velvet, the look feels really grand and over the top and interesting.”
Kate – whose clients include the likes of Margot Robbie, Sophie Turner and Dakota Johnson – explained she prefers not to ask designers to create custom gowns but looks to find “the best dress on the best girl”.
She told The Hollywood Reporter: “Oscar de la Renta didn’t do a traditional runway show, but even if they had, whether people have seen a dress before doesn’t concern me.
“I’m not interested in asking a designer to cook up a custom dress just for the sake of doing custom; I think it’s important that dresses relate back to what’s on the runway. My job is to take the best of what’s available in the world of fashion and match it to these women.
“It’s the best dress on the best girl, and I think she looks really good.”
The stylist first saw the gown via video prior to the collection’s release earlier this month and knew “immediately” after Selena tried it on that it was right for her.
She said: “It’s super flattering and feels very her. There’s always that moment when someone puts on a dress and it’s immediately apparent that this is the one. The cut is fun and feels aligned with Selena’s style.”
Cameron Green was sheepish on the evening of day one when he admitted he did not know how to bat with the lower order.
“I’m still trying to work out how best to play with a tail,” he said. “It’s still a fine balance between still trying to score runs but then [not] making the guys down the bottom face too many balls.”
It took him all of 16 hours to work it out, as he and Josh Hazlewood broke a host of records with a rare and priceless 116-run 10th wicket partnership to completely deflate New Zealand and help post a first innings total of 383 that looked above par on a tricky Basin Reserve pitch. It was the highest tenth-wicket partnership against New Zealand in Test history, and Australia’s fourth-best ever.
Green continued where he left off from the opening day, making a masterful 174 not out while Hazlewood survived 62 balls for 22. It was the third-longest innings Hazlewood had faced in Test cricket in terms of deliveries, and his fifth-highest score, having not passed 11 in his last 28 Test innings across five years.
Matt Henry‘s fifth wicket finally broke the stand after New Zealand suffered the indignity of having the first session extended by half an hour, having not taken a wicket in the first 120 minutes of play.
As good as Green and Hazlewood were, it was an insipid display from New Zealand, except for Henry who deserved to have a fifth much earlier in the morning. They had no obvious plan. There was no real vigour or intensity. They bowled with the assumption that the tenth wicket would fall at some point. But it did not. It was yet another example of New Zealand letting Australia off the hook after having them in a vulnerable position.
Tim Southee‘s form with the ball has to be a huge worry for the New Zealand hierarchy. One Test shy of 100, the captain went wicketless in the first innings and hardly troubled Australia’s final pair. He bowled just four maidens in 27 overs and built no pressure on any batters. In his last five Tests, he has taken just six wickets at 62.66, striking at 124.5.
Green’s actions early in the morning backed up his own words about not quite knowing how to shepherd the tail. There were times it looked like Hazlewood was the senior man talking him through it. There was even one comical moment when Hazlewood almost completed two full runs after some miscommunication with Green who did not run despite an easy two being on offer to retain the strike for the next over.
Hazlewood needed to survive 12 balls in the first three overs before Green found his method and started farming the strike. Green opted to play out the first four balls of each over with eight fielders on the rope, before either taking a single, walloping a boundary, or doing both.
While Henry was still causing him enormous trouble with balls pitched on a good length, the bowlers at the other end decided to bounce him to try and keep him on strike. Green gleefully smashed five pull shots over the legside fence into the crowd with zero fear of holing out to the men stationed in the deep.
Hazlewood then got into the groove smoking two cover drives himself. New Zealand’s heads dropped. The partnership climbed up the records charts, past the famous Jason Gillespie-Glenn McGrath laughathon at the Gabba in 2004.
It was a redemption of sorts for Hazlewood with the bat. He had cut a forlorn figure in Australia’s last Test against West Indies as he stood still in the middle, holding the pose of an attempted forward defence while his off stump was splayed, and Shamar Joseph charged away in celebration of a famous Test win.
Australia’s lower-order batting has been a major problem in recent times, save for the heroics and Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon at Edgbaston in the Ashes. There have been times where Australia have been six-out all out. The diminishing returns of Cummins, Lyon, Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc with the bat has been a source of concern within the camp, although it had been papered over by their outstanding bowling contributions.
So often it has been Australia who have been on the receiving end of frustrating last-wicket stands. Headingley 2019 lives long in the memory. But in the last 12 months, Australia has conceded three half-century tenth-wicket stands including two in the recent summer against Pakistan and West Indies. Only South Africa and now New Zealand have conceded one other 50-plus last-wicket stand in that time.
There would have been glee in the dugout as Green and Hazlewood kept accumulating with ease. The partnership looked in no trouble at all until Hazlewood chipped one to mid-off trying another expansive drive, having been very disciplined in defence for most of the session.
But he should be proud of his efforts. As should Green, whose highest Test score raised his average back up to 37.51, past the career marks of exulted Test allrounders Keith Miller and Ben Stokes.
